Sharing Is Caring

Well sometimes if you are very blessed you get to see something that you have believed be proven correct right before your eyes. I have been a proponent of local politics first and our political training and attention should be such. Today I had the blessing to speak with a young person that is deeply concerned with the direction of our nation. They are worried is we are even going to have a nation. The rapidity of its’ decline is concerning for sure. They have a great deal of knowledge and passion but did not know where to direct the energy.

The national picture in Washington DC is frightening for sure but there is a reality about one’s effectiveness there. It is my thought that politicians and media have most of us howling at the moon most of the time. A process that may cathartic but does affect any positive change. I always offer a local option to folks. Local takes less money and fewer people.

In my last Tea Party rally speech, I remember telling the crowd to start going to school board and county commission meetings. Coming to a rally hearing speeches and hanging out is great but it is not activism. There were about 1000 people at that rally and my suggestion was that 50 of them show up at the next school board meeting. I promised them that the school board would take notice. It would be non-media event and they would learn a great deal about what is really going on with local education. And here in Florida those must allow for public comment. Seems like a perfect plan to plant the seeds of freedom and liberty while encouraging local politicians into more correct behavior. But of course, it never happened, and our school district is a dysfunctional as any in the country. The same plan should be going on at city council meeting and county commission meetings. This is one of the things that the left does much better than those on the right.

So as our conversation continued I “quizzed” them on some local names. They had a firm grasp on the horrors of HR1 but was not well versed on the local scene. So, I suggested getting up to speed on the local scene as is there are numerous progressive items and the like to work against just minutes from their home. I assured them that digging around in the slime that is local politics would be as frustrating as anything they would experience in Washington DC with one main difference. They might be able to effect positive change here locally. That is the point, right?

It made my heart smile when we were saying goodbye, I was thanked for spending time a passing on some wisdom. It was confirmation at that point to me that this is/was the missing piece. The passing of wisdom and the willingness to mentor. This is not a quick fix, but it is the best fix! We must make ourselves available to young people and people that are like mined.
